With the coronavirus pandemic still being an issue, we didn’t think it was wise to return to the fully blown Halloween street party of years gone by. However, we felt we could do something this year that brought people together. With this in mind, we planned a hybrid Halloween!
What we did
As luck would have it, the 31st October fell on a Sunday in 2021 so we decided to use the Community Stall as a base for some Halloween fun. We encouraged children to come to the tent during the market in their Halloween outfits. At the stall we set up some creepy crafts and had some fun picture frames for people to take their photos with. We also had a ghost trail around six local shops. We gave out maps that had to be filled in with the correct colour ghost and sent the children off with their parents to find the ghosts in the shop windows. 92 children took part and each one received a prize.
As not everyone was comfortable about venturing out due to the pandemic, we also organised some online activities. Once again we had the magnificent live Amigos Magic show and a pre-recorded Halloween Bop for little ones from Jessica Sparkles.
People seemed to enjoy the online competitions we held in 2020 so we held them again with the categories: Creative Costume, Best Baking and Wonderful Windows. Entrants had to take a photo of their creation and either email us or tag us on social media. Winners were then contacted and given £10 in special Herne Hill Halloween pounds to spend in one of eight local shops.
