Retrofit Architects and Consultants
Whole house retrofit assessors and co-ordinators that help homeowners plan energy efficiency improvements and give impartial advice. They can also connect you with vetted heat pump and solar & battery installers. Based in South London.

Passivhaus consultants and architects based in East Dulwich.
Based in Peckham, this architecture firm specialise in retrofitting and are members of ACAN (Architects Climate Action Network).
A large firm who have retrofit assessors and coordinators who can undertake retrofits of large blocks of flats as well as one-off homes. Might be useful for people living in social housing or private blocks of flats.
EPC certificates, home visits by domestic energy advisors (DEAs) and retrofit coordinators, thermal camera imaging. Part of South East London Community Energy (SELCE).

Conservation Areas / Older Buildings
Chris Procter’s publication aims to provide a methodology to update Conservation Area Guidance in planning which will allow more complete Climate Emergency Retrofitting. Downloadable as a pdf.
The Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance are one of the founders of the Whole House retrofit approach in the UK. They specialise in traditional buildings and have lots of resources and advice on their website.
The Dulwich Estate has some very basic guidelines on what permissions are needed from them for various alterations to your freehold or leasehold home.

Windows, Doors and vents
Various options for modern and traditional-looking energy efficient doors and windows.
Energy efficient, triple-glazed windows and doors.
Moisture sensitive vents for rooms and windows. Also heat recovery (MHVR) systems.

Renewable Technologies
Local heat pump installer who works with BB Heat Pumps.
MCS certified heat pump installers based near Brighton but covering Herne Hill.
Independent experts in solar energy,  battery storage and electric car charging points, and over the past decades they’ve designed and installed thousands of systems across the UK; for councils, universities, businesses and homeowners.
Based in Hampshire so may not cover SE24, this company design and install whole house renewable energy solutions as well as encouraging more women into the industry.
Installers of solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, batteries, heat pumps and mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems. Based in Kent.
Group-buying for solar PV and battery storage systems for homeowners, tenants with permission and businesses.
NB: As of July 2022 there were 385 complaints on Solar Together London Phase 4, mainly around poor customer service/communication and delayed/cancelled installations. Please research thoroughly.

Community Energy
Brixton-based experts in energy efficiency, fuel poverty, community energy and solar power. They are also writing guidelines for how private tenants can advocate for block-wide retrofits.
Herne Hill based organisation SE24 develop locally-owned renewable energy projects, and energy conservation measures, so that we can all reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and put money back into the local community to challenge fuel poverty. Has installed solar panels on the roof of Charter School through a shares scheme.
Brixton Energy have completed three projects installing solar panels on social housing, generating clean renewable electricity, a financial return for their investors and income for their community fund.

Builders who specialise in sustainable home refurbishments, deep retrofits and new-builds. They can work to Passivhaus requirements as well as EnergieSprong. Have completed many projects in London.
Government-endorsed list of contractors for retrofits.
Sister company to ecofurb, retrofitworks offers local building contractors the chance to become members to get job offers for retrofit works. All jobs are assigned a retrofit coordinator who oversees the quality control of the contractors.

MCS is a standards organisation who create and maintain standards that allows for the certification of products, installers and their installations. This is the list of MCS certified installers but you can also see a list of MCS certified products on the website.
A list of members of the Passive House Trust in the UK (NB: the list is open to anyone and does not necessarily imply achievement of the Passivhaus standard for buildings or components, or attainment of Passivhaus-related qualifications.)

Energy Advice / Fuel Poverty

An independent organisation working to address the climate emergency through energy efficiency and clean energy solutions.
Free energy advice for Londoners, supported by the Mayor of London. Has a list of support services in different areas of London.
Harry Paticas works with schools to provide retrofit advice as well as running workshops with pupils around climate change, energy efficiency and fuel poverty.
National Energy Foundation is an independent domestic energy and sustainability charity who have been at the forefront of improving the use of energy in buildings for more than 30 years.
A community energy group tackling climate change and fuel poverty across South East London. Energy advice, grants and help with tackling fuel poverty. May not be working in Herne Hill currently.

Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) is a network of individuals within architecture and related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown.

Jobs and Training
The National Self Build & Renovation Centre is the UK’S only permanent venue for independent homebuilding advice & support. Their visitor centre is in Swindon and you can go and see lots of examples of different materials, build systems as well as go on training courses.
