News from the front line » Herne Hill finally gets its new ATM, but with a catch.......

After what seems like years of campaigning, lobbying and nagging the new ATM has been installed in the old position next to the entrance to Herne Hill station. Great I hear you all say and long overdue. Stuck as we have been with only one unreliable free ATM outside Sainsbury's the area has suffered from not being able to get cash. The old ATM in the now defunct Lloyds bank used to dispense over £600K per week and since that went people have been travelling away from Herne Hill to get cash and invariably spending it where they get the cash, outside of the local area.

Eventually we heard that the old ATM position was going to be re-instated and low, a new ATM has now appeared. The big problem is that it is not one of the free ATM systems. Herne Hill already has a chargeable ATM in Costcutters - it dispenses about £3,000 per week.We cannot see the new ATM being much used even though it is opposite Escape Bar and so benefit from late night revellers who need that extra injection of cash.

Somehow we need to get them to drop the charges so that it gets used and the local economy benefits.
