Reports that the new paving laid outside the park as part of the Junction changes has started to crack up already. Photos clearly show the slabs are cracking and falling apart. It would be good to know why this sort of paving was chosen if the life expectancy is measured in months rather than years.

Kindred Bakery will be featured in "The Great British Bake Off" Tuesday BBC2 8.00pm
Ten home bakers take part in a 'bake off', which will test every aspect of their baking skills as they battle it out to be crowned the Great British Bake Off's Best Amateur Baker.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00tndz9/The_Great_British_Bake_Off_Episode_3/
This week Mel visits Kindred Bakery and chats to Anthony about how his family first started selling sandwiches
Olley's will be featured in "The Great British Waste Menu" on Wednesday 25th August at 8:30 on BBC1.
Four of the nation's top chefs - Angela Hartnett, Richard Corrigan, Matt Tebbutt and Simon Rimmer - journey deep into the heart of Britain's food waste problem, exploring how and why the nation throws away and reject huge quantities of perfectly edible food.
Cameras follow the chefs as they source shocking amounts of unwanted food from every link in the food chain - from supermarkets to ordinary homes, markets to farms - and then transform it into mouth-watering dishes.
The chefs face a unique and near-impossible task: can they create a fabulous banquet for over 60 VIPs using the food that the rest of us don't want? Can they create restaurant-standard food using ingredients that have been discarded, rejected or deemed unsuitable for sale? Will they be able to change the way Britons think about waste food?
Harry hopes his customers in Herne Hill will be as proud as he is to be involved in this programme.
The 16th September will mark one year since the Brixton Pound was launched in Lambeth town hall. Since then, the local currency has gone from strength to strength with over 170 businesses accepting Brixton Pounds and over £30,000 worth of Brixton Pounds in circulation. Lambeth Council estimates that the positive media coverage generated for the area by the launch of the currency has been worth around £100,000.
The core aim of the Brixton Pound is to encourage Brixton residents and business owners to spend their money locally with independent shops. Time and time again economists have proven that independent businesses contribute more to a local economy as they are more likely to employ local people and sources their goods and services locally than chain stores and supermarkets.
Herne Hill has a strong community of independent businesses with committed and loyal customers. Businesses in the area have been generally supportive of the currency and you can spend your Brixton Pounds in a real mix of places. Sesami Deli on
The Brixton Pound team recently embarked on a new project, ‘mapping’ the supply chains of various Brixton businesses. This involves talking to business owners and finding out how they spend their money and where they could switch to local suppliers or service providers. The aim of this project is to encourage Brixton businesses to trade with each other, strengthening local business networks while at the same time increasing local demand and boosting the economy. If you’d like to find our more about this project or are interested in volunteering with the Brixton Pound please get in touch by emailing brixtonpound@googlemail.com.
Lambeth have announced that there will be no public firework display in Brockwell Park this year. This is to save on their budgets. Follow the discussion on the forum here.

Plus there are early morning Dr Bikes on the same days between 7.30 and 9.30 on Clapham Common Southside at the junction of Narbonne Avenue.

A new telephone 'scam' has arrived.
I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was
disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately
of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly
VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very
'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152
Obviously the male realised I wasn't believing his story, so offered to
demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try
phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.
AND HE DID!!
My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.
Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was
with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there
& then.
I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no
intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.
He hung up.
Dialled
I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just
started apparently but it is escalating.
Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam.
The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's
real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.
This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have
been 0800 800152 which takes you through to BT Business. The “cutting off of
the line“ is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and
you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the
person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop
trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be
convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool
the elderly and vulnerable. Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have
your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out
your account.
Lambeth Country Show weekend may bring chaos to local streets. Instead of the usual one-way system imposed in the vicinity of the park Lambeth have gone far further this year in also banning all street parking in the area. Quite where they think a thousand or so cars will vanish to and not be liable for parking fees is not explained. Nor is there any mention of what measures are being taken to counteract the rat running and high-speed traffic that will entail with streets cleared of all parked cars.
This affects the following streets:
Brixton Water Lane, Croxted Road, Dalberg Road, Dulwich Road, Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill, Hurst Street, Milkwood Road, Milton Road, Railton Road, Regent Road, Rymer Street, Shakespeare Road, Stradella Road.
If you missed the letter that detailed the restrictions then download a copy here
Call Lambeth events on 020 7926 7054 to find out why.
Lambeth traffic engineers are removing the recently installed traffic island between Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill and Milkwood Road. This is due to the high number of complaints from cyclists and residents that it caused more problems than it solved.
Traffic coming north under the bridge had to swerve to the left and somehow get two lanes of vehicles through where there was only a gap for one. It meant that cyclists were the meat in the sandwich.
In addition traffic turning right into Half Moon Lane blocked all vehicles that wanted to go straight up Herne Hill.
A representative from Lambeth traffic engineers and roads said that it was never going to be possible to get a smooth flow of traffic through the junction.
The proposal is to build a smaller and narrower one that will not impact on vehicles so much. It then removes the safe haven for pedestrians that the previous Island provided.
I am an architect living and working in Herne Hill and have signed up to take part in "Architect in the House". It is an event giving you advice for your home by an architect, which you may like to develop or just use for ideas, see website for details
Architect in the House gives homeowners an hour’s free consultation with an RIBA chartered architect.
In exchange, the homeowner donates £40 to Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity, so they can help less fortunate families find and keep a home.
With an architect’s help, you can make sense of your space, and bring your design ideas to life. In an uncertain housing market, why not unlock the potential of the home you’re in?

The lastest crime statistics for the Lambeth side of Herne Hill have been released. At the moment they are only in powerpoint format. Herne Hill has been identified as a hot spot for burglary. Download them here.
In addition we have the crime analysis for Herne Hill in Word format. Download it here.
The latest figures on The Metropolitan Police website are for April. In Herne Hill during April 5 robberies were reported in Brockwell Park, and 5 incidents of violence against the person. A breakdown of sub wards in Herne Hill Ward is available on: http://maps.met.police.uk/
Click on Lambeth, then zoom in to get to ward level, click on the 'Text View' tab on the top right to get the sub ward breakdown, small map at the bottom of that page shows which sub ward figures you are looking at.
Village Ward stats are available from the same link. Click on Southeark on the map then drill down as above. In the Herne Hill arwa of Village Ward there were 4 incidents of personal robbery and 3 of violence against the person.
The Safer Neoighbourhood Team from the Police have warned that there has been a spate of burglaries in and around the Poets Corner area of Herne Hill. They include Dulwich Road and Effra Parade. On one occasion the keys were stolen and the police ask everyone to be on their guard and to ensure that all care is taken in securing your premises.
This is especialy true for anyone living in divided accomodation where there is a common hallway. These are the premisies that are most vulnerable to break-ins.
Wheels For Wellbeing are delighted to have won a 3 year grant from the Big Lottery Fund for our work in Lambeth and Croydon. The £330k award will secure our three weekly sessions.
Anne Wright, who comes regularly to Wheels for Wellbeing sessions in Brockwell Park said: “I am so pleased about this funding, as I know that I will be able to continue cycling with the club. Cycling gets me out and exercising. It has made me determined and has given me much more confidence. I’m now planning to buy a tricycle to ride on the road, with training from Wheels for Wellbeing. That will make me much more independent.”
Isabelle Clement, Chair of the trustees, says; “We are very grateful to the funders and other supporters who believed in us from the start 3 years ago - they made it possible for us to be awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant now. This funding comes at a difficult time for many in the voluntary sector so it is particularly welcome. On behalf of all the trustees, staff and our participants, I would like to say a big thank you to the Big Lottery Fund in appreciating the value of what we do. ”
Janet Paske, the Manager, says “Funding cycling for disabled people is funding much more than access to leisure, transport and sport. It can mean increased mobility and personal safety, getting around without having to deal with the prejudices of others. Thanks to the Big Lottery Fund, we know that we can look forward to supporting more disabled people to cycle over the next 3 years.”
Dear neighbours,
Yesterday (Friday) afternoon I had a knock on the door and a smartly dressed young man told me that ‘all the houses on the street are going to get surveyed’ and asked for my phone number so they can ‘call me and explain all about it’. He presented a yellow leaflet which he refused to leave with me, though I did get the name of the company.
Apparently he’s been to everyone on the street.
Having failed to get more of an explanation from him, and getting a bit suspicious, I refused to give him our phone number and have looked into this online.
THIS IS A SCAM, and this is how it works: the company, Apex Direct, approaches residents on the street. Once they have phone numbers they call and sound very professional explaining the nature of the ‘survey’. Once this survey is done, they call you to let you know that (surprise surprise) there’s quite a bit of urgent work to do on your house. They then give you a quote, and when you don’t accept it a ‘manager’ calls you to give you a great discount. When you refuse that, they offer you a great loan to help you pay for the work. They then give you a better loan offer, etc. etc. until you agree to do the work.
For those of you who gave phone numbers, please ignore the calls from now on, no matter how convincing they sound.
I’m particularly concerned for elderly and vulnerable residents of the street who are usually the target of such companies. If you think any of your neighbours might fall for this, please talk to them.
You can read more about this on the following thread on moneysavingxpert.com forum – it’s a bit long but will give you a good idea of what’s this all about:

The Ruskin Park Treasure Hunt
This intergenerational community art project will bring together the work of 5 diverse community groups in the neighbourhood of Ruskin Park including St Saviour’s Primary School, Tudor Stacks elderly care home, Ruskin 1 o’ clock club and Popular Youth. The fifth group will be open to local residents who do not fall into any of the above groups and would like to get involved in the creative process.
Each group will work with an artist, over a series of 5 workshops to create a clue in the form of work of art - poetry, drawing, song, sculpture, performance.... The resulting work of each group will contribute to the larger scale collaboration of the treasure hunt where all the clues will work together, along with 3 clues commissioned from local artists.
The event is planned for early October and will tie in with the harvest lunch celebration at the recently launched Ruskin Park community garden and with The Big Draw event making this an unmissable 3-in-1 celebration for Ruskin Park.
This project is under construction and we are hoping to secure funding to run it in the autumn.
As part of the process it would be really helpful to get some feedback from local residents. If Ruskin Park is your local park, would you please give 5 minutes to responding to this very short questionnaire?
Please click here to complete the survey.
Thank you,
Lottie Davies

News has come through that the campaign led by Heron Trinity Community Trust to purchase St Johns Hall in Milkwood Open Space has failed. This has resulted in the closure of the one and only Youth Club in Herne Hill ward and also the cancellation of many other activites that took place in the hall.
The Herne Hill Parochial Church Council (owners of the hall) had been in negotiations with Heron Trinity Community Trust to sell the hall to them in order for it to be a community building for the benefit of everyone. Despite the Community Trust raising enough pledged money to get close on the asking price the Church Council have decided to put the hall on to the open market to achieve the highest price it can.
This is a great blow to everyone who has been involved in the long running campaign. The loss of the only amenity in the area will impact on everyone living in Herne Hill and neaby Loughborough Junction.
Despite this slap in the face everyone concerned is continuing to seek alternative sources of funds in an effort to get the Church to change its mind and agree that such a valuable asset is best used by the community rather than sold off just for profit.
The debate and issues raised continues on the online Forum section - see here
The scaffolding across the pavement in Dulwich Road in front of what used to to be the glazing company shop will be there for some time. Apparently there are major structural problems with the building that houses that parade of shops. The glazing company have moved in to one of the arches in Railton Road where the Timber Yard used to be. Best wear a hard hat when walking along the pavement there....
Spacia, the property arm of Network Rail have been granted planning permission for redeveloping the railway arches in Milkwood Road. They will be a mix of retail and commercial use. They plan to be on site end April/May this year.
The crime statistics have been released for the Herne Hill Ward. Find out if they match your experiences of late. Download the full document here

Brockwell Park MAC update, February 2010
Since the re-appointment of Land Use Consultants, the Steering Group for the HLF restoration of the Park has begun meeting again to discuss the final, detailed plans. A timetable has now been drawn up and work on the Park will commence this year.
The refurbishment of the Paddling Pool will be a priority; the current paddling pool is in a very poor state. A new pool will be built to modern safety specifications, with an adjacent wet play area at the site of the present pool. A recirculating system for water and separate paddling pool drainage will ensure that the Large Pond will no longer be contaminated by waste from the Paddling Pool and offers the chance to improve the biodiversity of the Large Pond.
A great deal of the work will not be very visible; new land drains, for instance, are an important part of the restoration but will not show. However, the flooding and waterlogging of many areas of the Park should soon be a thing of the past.
The Changing Room Block refurbishment committee continues to meet; the architects plans for turning the block from an unused and neglected eyesore into a useable community space were presented to a MAC meeting last year. Raising the money to realise this will be more difficult than making plans, of course!
The MAC's Biodiversity group continues to meet with support from the South London Botanical Institute (also Park stakeholders) the Park Development and Education Officer and some individual Rangers. The Group has submitted an application to the Veolia Trust for a project to plant new hedging and waiting to hear whether this will be successful. The Veolia Trust committee will decide by April.
In the meantime the MAD (Music, Arts and Drama) for Brockwell Park group are planning an exciting new programme of Park events.
The MAC AGM will take place in March.

Women’s Design Service is setting up a Women’s Design Group in Lambeth and is looking for local women to get involved.
The Group will influence planning applications, policies and regeneration projects in Lambeth to ensure that women’s needs and interests are taken into account.
Women’s Design Groups aim to perform for gender what Access Groups delivered for disability, and give local women a voice in major plans, policies and planning applications. WDGs include both women from the community who have an interest in shaping their neighbourhoods, and women who are professionally involved in planning and the built environment. We want the Group to represent the experiences of a diverse range of women from different age, disability, ethnicity, sexuality and caring backgrounds.
A range of training is offered to enable women to participate fully in the Group including influencing town planning issues and sustainability.
Contact Georgia Wrighton, Project Worker on gwrighton@wds.org.uk or 020 7490 5210 if you would be interested in getting involved. Also see the Women’s Design Service website www.wds.org.uk for more information."

Lambeth have admitted that there is little else they can do to enforce any sort of regulation on the mini-cab company operating in Railton Road alongside the station. In response to a members enquiry sent in by Herne Hill Ward councillor Becca Thackeray Lambeth said "Having spoken with the Street Operations support manager, he feels that there is little else that Lambeth Parking can do to prevent the mini-cabs parking illegally. Our Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) are often abused or the vehicles drive aware upon a CEO’s approach or they either pay the minimum amount of money to prevent a PCN".
Lambeth have said that they will continue to try and find a solution but to date the abuse still goes on. Local traders are incensed at the ineffectiveness of the enforcement in the area. Many local residents have complained that they have received tickets in the area but the mini-cabs parked next to them are ignored.
When the mini-cab drivers are approached by members of the public and traders and asked not to block the pavement or to pay for their parking the same as everyone else they are subjected to a torrent of abuse and threats. At the recent Herne Hill Expo the head of parking enforcement for Lambeth was verbally abused by an employee of the mini-cab company when he aslked them to move their taxis from the pavement. It wasn't until the lorries arrived to lift the illegally parked taxis did the vehicles moved.
Many local residents are boycotting the company until they agree to comply with the law. For more evidence as to the typical abuse see the anti-social behaviour section.
