A great new Book group for Herne Hill
We've been meeting roughly once a month since February 2012, usually in the Commercial pub, opposite Herne Hill station.
Each meeting we choose the book for the next time by popular vote. Please bring along details of any book you'd like to nominate.
June Meeting
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 11th June to discuss The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
We're meeting as usual in The Commercial pub, opposite the station, starting at 8pm.
New members always welcome, especially if you've read the book.
If you'd like to nominate a book for next time, please bring a copy or a review with you.
Support your local bookshop! Herne Hill Books have some very reasonably priced Great Gatsby editions with beautiful covers and very high production value. They are £6.99 normally, but with the group's 20% discount, this would make it £5.59 per book. They will have multiple copies in stock and they can order them for the following day, if they run out.
April Meeting - NB now rescheduled for May 14th
April's meeting will be on Wednesday 24th. Tuesday 14th May. The book is The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen.

The venue will be the Commercial as usual (opposite Herne Hill station). Arrive 7.30pm - 8pm.
f you'd like to nominate a book for next time, please bring it along.

Please bring along nominations for next month's book.
February Meeting
The February book club meeting will be on Wednesday 6th February.
The book is A Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes.
Starting between 7.30pm and 8pm in The Commercial as usual (opposite Herne Hill Station).

Re: Herne Hill book club
Hi Edward,
Is the book club going ahead tonight?
I'm quite new to Herne Hill and love reading books, so I would like to come along but I've still got about 100 pages of the book to go! If I manage to finish it I'll come along for sure!
Thanks,
Laura
Re: Herne Hill book club
Hi Laura,
Yes, it's going ahead as advertised - 7.30/8pm start at The Florence.
Do feel free to come along even if you don't quite finish the book, so long as you don't mind the ending being revealed!
Edward
Re: Herne Hill book club
Hi Edward,
I'm not going to be able to make it tonight as I haven't quite finished the book and as I'm really enjoying it I'd rather not know what happens! Can you let me know what you decide to read next as I'd like to come along to the next one?
Thanks,
Laura

Re: Herne Hill book club
Hi All
We had a great turnout to discuss The Forgotten Waltz this week - thank you to everyone who came to the meeting, and for those who couldn't make it i hope you enjoyed the book.
We gave it an average score of 6.5/10 and the general consensus around the table seemed to be that the writing style was more of a draw than the subject matter, with the novel presenting a very cleverly written observation of an affair but that the characters could have been better developed and were, in some cases, mildly annoying!
The next book is this months Guardian Book Club choice - Fatherland by Robert Harris. Here's the link if you would like to check it out before buying:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/apr/06/book-club-fatherland-robert-harris
Herne Hill Books have kindly agreed to offer a 20% discount, as before, on purchases of this book by Herne Hill Book Club members.
Happy reading and see you on May 15th. We will be meeting again at the Half Moon Pub, 7.30 for 8pm in the usual area.
Re: Herne Hill book club
Hello,
I am very interested in joining the book club. Could you let me know the book at the moment and when you will be next reading it!
Thanks,
Jayne
Re: Herne Hill book club
Hi Jayne - sorry, I've been lax about publicising the next meeting.
We're continuing to use the Guardian's book club choice, which means that this month is Gilead by Marilynne Robinson.
The lovely Herne Hill books will as before give you a 20% discount if you mention the Herne Hil Book Club.
In a departure from our customary practice, we're meeting on a Wednesday thing month - the 13th of June.
We'll be meeting as usual in the Half Moon from about 7.30pm-8pm, in the snug to the left of the bar if we can arrange it, otherwise wherever there is space.
All welcome; I hope to see you there!
Edward
