Playwright, journalist and artist Beverley Mason presents a series of strange, fantastical paintings/collages to illustrate a tantalising new narrative of A Midsummer Night’s Dream entitled Trouble in Paradise. These illustrations bring to life the otherworldly creatures and landscapes from this modern take on a classic favourite. She will also show for one night only a series of paintings entitled SACRIFICIAL BURLESQUES. Because of their adult content this is at the Private View only.

Taking references from Lady Gaga, Max Ernst, 18th century erotic art, Indian and Egyptian Deities, Dita Von Teese and English Lad’s magazines, I have created a series of paintings under the title Sacrificial Burlesques. These works are a play on the current obsession with the perfect female form and the “Barbification” of women. Porn to pole dancing is now seen as “liberation”. As a satire on this I have created hybrids with connotations of perversion, sex, death and danger. These unsettling creatures, whist being grotesque parodies of their real life counterparts, have, I believe, a subversive fetish power, which is ultimately violent and destructive. Their retaliation as victims is a form of sacrifice.
Sacrificial Burlesques is the first in a series I am working on under the heading CHIMERAS – those mythical things that we believe in but which may not be true. Among my future projects are Haunted Daughters - studies of extreme beauty; and I Made Myself Like This - a series on iconic victims such as Marilyn Monroe.

Popchoir in Dulwich - New Junior and Teen choirs starting in January
After a hugely successful first term culminating in a fantastic concert in St Barnabas Hall, Popchoir is now expanding in Dulwich with the launch of Popchoir Junior (7-11) and Popchoir Teens (11+). These two new choirs will also be held on Wednesdays : Juniors 4.30 - 6.00pm and Teens 6.15 - 7.45pm. giving younger singers the opportunity to experience Popchoir for themselves. Joining any of our Popchoirs is easy. Anyone who loves to sing can become a member and there is no audition or any need to be able to read music. Being part of a choir is known to increase self-confidence, encourage social skills and team-work and has proven health benefits, as well as providing the 'feelgood' factor.
For the Juniors and Teens there will be an opportunity to come along and try the choirs before joining, on Wednesday 6th January. Please call or email for more information.
The adult Popchoir has gone from strength to strength but there are still places left, especially for low altos/men and 'sopranos' . Popchoir rehearses on Wednesdays from 8.00- 9.30pm. The new term starts on January 6th. Please call or email to register.
We look forward to welcoming you to Popchoir
