Dee Dees Bar 77 Herne Hill
Hi this bar is putting in an application for a late license and live music. The bar is tiny and in the middle of a residential area - and its customers do not seem to be locals (families with young children trying to get some sleep).
This seems to be slipping below the radar - and is being monitored by Sarah Neman at Southwark on 0207 525 4327 - address for correspondence:
Environmental Protection Team,
Southwark Council,
Tooley Street,
PO Box 64529
If anyone concerned wishes to send in their views.
Thanks
Carly
The application is listed in the link below. It would be advisable that any locals that are genuinely concerned about the issue the new business hours will have should raise an objection before 22nd June, as its almost impossible to revoke a license once granted.
If you are a local resident to this establishment, you should aim to raise awareness to other locals of this for them to review the application and add comments if they wish.

Thanks Hernhillian,
I have been monitoring this as well and plan to object. If we don't want this licensing application to be granted, we need to object
Some useful background facts:
- 77 Herne Hill has planning permission for use as a restaurant, but not as a bar.
- Planning have said application for use as a bar is unlikely due to noise / disturbance.
- Southwark planning have sent Dee Dee's owner a warning letter (not being heeded it appears)
- The address of Dee Dee's owner onthe licensing application is over 40 miles away.
- SE24 residents close to "restaurants" improperly run as bars on Norwood Road have had years of misery waiting for planning to be enforced. (They're still waiting!)
If you want to object to the licensing application, it's important to base your objection on on one or more of the following criteria (any other matters will be ignored):
- the prevention of public nuisance (this includes noise);
- the prevention of crime and disorder;
- public safety;
- the protection of children from harm.
You should also include:
- your name and address (this would only be revealed if the case were to go to a public hearing);
- signature and date;
- the number of the application you are opposed to (No 838198).
You should send it to:
Southwark Licensing Team,
Hub 2, 3rd Floor,
PO Box 64529,
London SE1P 5LX
While Dee Dee's in its current form might not appear a problem, what the owner plans really could be, especially for its nearest neighbours.
If you're unhappy about a 7 day a week music venue operating without planning permission in this peaceful, family friendly neighbourhood, please send an objection!
Bets wishes,
Sun_ray
Hi Carly, Hernhillian (and anyone else concerned)
If you're objecting to Dee Dee's extended hours +7 day music licence application, please also copy your response to
Councillor Toby Eckersley

(please use the proper symbol for email addresses instead of "at" - it's getting corrupted here for some reason)
He's been very proactive on this issue but at present seems to believe my wife and I are the only people concerned.
It's good to know we're not alone!
Best wishes,

Hello there,
I can understand why you may be a bit apprehensive; a bar opening and proposing to have live music going on into the night seems very worrying. However, i have been down to the bar on several different occasions now and find the place to be in actual fact very relaxing and not the raucous party house one would assume it would be. Surely, one extra hour would not turn it into a disco.
My husband and i stopped by over the Jubilee period and was very happy to be entertained by a jazz band they had for that night. Considering it was a bank holiday, again, the relaxing atmosphere was perfect. There were no pub louts lurking around the corner. Much to my husbands dismay (but to the community's benefit), the staff pour bottled beer into a glass and are very quick on clearing tables; i haven't seen a littered road yet and i am only a stone's throw away from the bar.
Frankly, i'm enjoying the bar and i hope to see it grow. I'm an avid fan of jazz and you can call me lazy or impatient or both but if i don't have to wait for The Poet down the road to open OR traipse down the hill, i'll happily cross the road and make use of the bar. My husband and all my family, know me to be the first one to say object when something is wrong but I like this bar and i have no intention on objecting the plans.

Hi LotttieF
Re your comment "Surely, one extra hour would not turn it into a disco."
Dee Dee's is applying for 2 hours more Fri & Sat, 9.5 Hours on a Sunday!! (it's written on their licensing application).

PS I see you've just joined the forum and posted at 3AM this morning!
It was a perfectly reasonable post and they went to the trouble of putting their name and road.
Please can we not have another horrible Poet coming, Deliverance coming style thread.
Hi Guys,
Just in case you can't hear us outside...we'll let you in on a secret; there's live music happening here tonite!
Come and enjoy it!
Hi all,
Just wanted to jump in and let people know firstly that Dee Dee's is mostly full of locals. I couldn't live closer if I tried and pop in often with neighbours.
I am delighted Dee Dee's has opened and have found the owner, staff and music always great.
With regards noise levels I would be genuinely astonished if it has ever reached a level that would disturb anyone. I arrived last night while a live band were on and couldn't hear the music until I was almost inside. Additionally the staff and owner are very reasonable and would never want to disturb anyone and I would encourage anyone with any concerns to pop in and speak to them directly.
I feel we should support our local businesses and hope Dee Dee's will succeed. It is a breath of fresh air to be able to spend time in a venue with a bit of energy!

Seems to me someone has finally done something successful with a space that has generally been one failure after another. Too many people try to snuff the life out of something before it has a chance to breath. I think that this can be a very positive establishment for the area and Herne Hill in general.
I live opposite the Lido and there are late events from time to time. Whether I like the music or not I applaude these events as they contribute to the Lidos appeal, success and popularity. I remember when it was a derilect squat. Let Herne Hill be vibrant and go from strength to strength.
We are a very special part of London with a great park, incredible transport links, a new public space, upcoming market, etcetera. Let us not return it to the dowdy, pedestrian, black and white place it once was.
