Former drug smuggler helps Brixton Yogathon
Former drug smuggler Nick Brewer helped lead the first ever Brixton Yogathon on Sunday 26th February.
Some 13 yoga teachers and students participated in the Yogathon – 108 sun salutations over the course of three hours - raising nearly £2000 in sponsorship for the Prison Phoenix Trust, which supports yoga and meditation in prisons through the UK and Ireland.
Nick Brewer, who grew up in Tulse Hill, got into yoga while serving a ten-year sentence in an Argentinian jail. He now teaches yoga in west London and told participants: “I know how important yoga is in prison and what a difference it can make. I was out of control, a monster and yoga saved me from myself.”
Yoga teacher and former Talma Road resident, Chris Holt, who organised the event, said: “A huge thank you to all the participants and their sponsors and to Yoga Point for giving us the space.

The Ingham 5 Live at Hooper's March 3rd - part of free Sinatra Tribute!
Less than a month ago, a lot of local people gathered at Southwark Council offices in Tooley Street for a music license review hearing. The hearing would decide the fate of Hooper's Bar (SE5 8DH) - a select number of neighbours had complained about noise from the pub on music nights and street drinking the rest of the time (it follows that if you smoke outside you drink out there too). Thankfully the music license was not revoked. A good thing too as the pub relies on event night trade to survive - but some adjustments were made to its timetable such as no drinking in Malfort Road after 9pm and no music after 11. Had the license been pulled we might be looking at nothing but flats on that corner in due course!

Technical Map expertise sought
We want to create a beautiful map to promote Herne Hill and our local shops and show facilities such as wifi, toilets etc. The map could be both printed (small and large) and online and are we exploring tools or systems to produce it. One option is OpenStreetMap, which works a bit like Wikipedia so everyone can contribute by adding shops, letterboxes and bike racks in their street.
If you have experience of the technical side of mapping and could help us understand which is the best method for our needs please contact info@hernehillforum.org.uk
